I used to live not too far away. It’s very beautiful there and very cold.
Hi! I’m Angy from Romania and I want to start building my house from earthbags. I have some questions, if it is possible to answer them:
1. What are the size of the empty bags?
2. I can build during the autumn and winter time?(I mean is not a problem if the earthbags are geting wet?)
3.How much moisture has to be inside of the soil?
Hi Angy. Be sure to try out our search engine in the upper right corner. Almost everything you need to know is free, either on this blog on our other site at EarthbagBuilding.com. Or you can save lots of time and buy my earthbag book: http://www.earthbagbuilding.com/articles/ebbuildingguide.htm
1. average size is 18″x30″ measured when empty
2. too much moisture will loosen the tamped soil, so cover the walls with plastic sheeting or tarps, and avoid freezing weather than can cause the soil to freeze and expand
3. only a small amount — about the same as in the ground naturally. All you need is just enough moisture for the clay to bind to the sand and gravel. Experiment by making some test bags. They should dry very hard. If water oozes out of the bags then the soil is too wet.
I thank you so much for your answer!
